Ankle & foot
The ankle and foot area plays a pivotal role in walking, jumping, running, as well as weightbearing the entire body in a standing position. Injuries and pain to this region can have serious impacts on function. There are many structures both around and within the ankle and foot that could be the cause of problems.
Some common causes of ankle and foot pain:
Ankle sprains (most commonly to the anterior talofibular ligament and calcaneofibular ligaement with your typical ankle roll)
Achilles ruptures/tendinopathies
Osteoarthritis
Plantar fasciitis
Medial longitudinal arch collapse/weakness, tibialis posterior dysfunction
Gait abnormalities
Physiotherapy for ankle and foot pain
Physiotherapy can be an effective form of conservative management for ankle and foot pain/injury. First, beginning with a detailed interview to understand the injury and behaviour of pain. After this a physical assessment will help to identify problematic structures and determine the best course of action in terms of treatment/management. Strategies for treatment/management that can be used include joint mobilisations, dry needling, soft tissue massage, muscle strengthening, muscle lengthening, nerve exercises, bracing, as well as advice and education regarding independent management.
Things to get started:
For acute soft-tissue injuries the acronym POLICE should be implemented as soon as the injury has occurred. POLICE – Protection, Optimal Loading, Ice, Compression, Elevation
Slow and gentle active movements within pain-free ranges
Light stretching at the ankle
